A critical look at the events of last weekend from an Indymedia poster.

It was less than a day after the RWB festival finished that local news reports in the Denby area started reporting that the residents were adamant the event would not be held on their doorstep next year.

The fact that local worries about clashes between the left and right had been building for several months was it seems only recognised by one group of anti-fascists and blatantly missed by others.

Indeed the usual suspects of ‘jump on the bandwagon’ Trotskyite groups, who had not even begun to mobilise until a couple of months prior to the event, ultimately seem to be stuck in the old left madness of negotiating with the police for no other reason than then becoming the ‘legitimate’ state sanctioned protest, guaranteed to do nothing other than portray themselves to be the vanguard in the struggle against British fascism.

This tactic is not missed on the majority of the left in Britain, and has created such apathy that a protest today is lucky to bring out less than a fifth of people it would have done a decade ago.

Their loss of all radical thinking has led to the inability to form any kind of strategy, such as one that recognised it would take very little effort to sway local feelings to those of outright objection to the RWB being held in the future.

This goes way over the heads of it’s instigators who are lost in the illusion that joining the machinations of parliamentary acceptability, somehow still maintains a revolutionary zeal with an ability to actually do anything other than become part of the problem.

How these groups, many linked to the SWP in one way or another, can even achieve the pitiful numbers they brought out to march past the RWB, is nothing short of a miracle. It is likely however that even those attending are in the not too distant future most likely to ‘burn out’, dejected and disillusioned, with what has become about as radical as a ‘walk in the park’.

Thankfully however it appears all is not lost. One organisation, Antifa, since it’s birth a few years ago, has constantly harangued and bitten chunks out of British fascist groups. leaving them with a constant headache they appear not to be able to medicate against.

The formation of Antifa, built by a handful of ex members from the untimely ‘drawing down’ of Anti Fascist Action as well as mobilising from the ranks of small but highly politically astute British anarchist groups, has rejuvenated a militant tradition going back to Cable Street, the Spanish Civil War and the 43 Group.

Watching their ‘tactics’ over the last year in the build up to the RWB has been nothing short of watching political genius at work. By appearing to be mobilising a mass group of activists from the UK and abroad it was always going to be a headache for local authorities not willing to take any chances.

Successful ‘no platform’ style actions against the British National Party and the likes of neo-nazi cult group the British Peoples Party, Antifa seemed to know that even by simply turning out a handful of people willing to do nothing more than produce five minutes of chaos, would be more than enough to produce the desired result, a Red White and Blue Festival no longer being held in Denby and the BNP organisers with a major problem on their hands i.e.

“Where do we find a local authority next year willing to take a chance on hosting the RWB?”

Amusingly, the fascist and neo-nazis on Stormfront have been having a field day.

Their belief that the propaganda put out by Antifa was actually implying the organisation genuinely believed they would shut down this years festival, and the far-rights lack of knowledge of ‘left-wing’ groups in general, the bigger picture seems to have completely passed them by.

So buoyed up with seeing a genuinely vociferous but small protest result in mass arrests they have convinced themselves Antifa have been crushed and those arrested are going to be doing years and years behind bars, which is about as likely as Nick Griffin joining the SWP!

Interestingly enough, at the time of writing, Antifa have not even officially confirmed they were actually there, another strategy which shows the level of a political militant awareness that leaves the far-right nervously cackling from the sidelines, convincing themselves all is well in their 'fatherland'.

Where the rest of the British ‘left’ go from here is at present unclear. While the likes of the SWP have already claimed some kind of victory out of actually doing nothing at all, it is of genuine concern that people will still fall for their redundant and impotent style of politics.

One thing is for certain. If the SWP and their front groupings such as the UAF are allowed to continue their nonsense, the genuine fervour of many on the so called ‘left’ will remain untapped.

There remains an anti-fascist militancy in Britain that is sitting in the wings just waiting for its chance to ignite. Let’s hope that the likes of Antifa are able to light the spark.

Their actions up to now and the likelihood that their inspired militancy has stopped the RWB being held in Denby in the future suggests they are.

The Long And The Short Of It.

Residents in Codnor have said they do not want the British National Party's annual festival to take place in the area again next year after a weekend of disruption.
Hundreds of people marched from Codnor to protest against the event causing road closures and residents say they were verbally abused by party members as they drove to the festival.

John Lumsden of Codnor Denby Lane said: "We had some verbal abuseb from BNP members as they drove past but I don't think they'll be back here next year.

"Despite what the party says about the attendance we only counted 75 cars in the car park on Saturday.

"If they do try and hold the event here again the residents will do what they did before, object to it and try to stop it taking place."

A retired couple on Codnor Denby Lane who did not wish to be named said they did not want the festival to return to the area next year.

The woman said: "We'd rather it wasn't here next year. The BNP seem to have come out of it all a lot better than the protesters but we don't agree with fascism and would rather the festival take place somewhere else."

Becky Williams, from Notts Stop the BNP, said: "The BNP has chosen for another year to hold the festival in an area where it is not wanted. The people who live in this area are intimidated by the narrow views of the party, they don't represent the views of the majority of the people. It isn't what they want for their families."

Mark Longden, from Unite Against Fascism, said: "The views of the BNP are not credible, they encourage racism and hate and stand for fascist values. It's not right they have been allowed to get a base anywhere which attributes them credibility."

Labour MP for Amber Valley Judy Mallaber said she agreed with the group's right to a peaceful protest.

However on Friday British National Party leader Nick Griffin told The News that the party was grateful for the support of people in the local area that enabled them to stage the event.

Mr Griffin said: "We're very grateful to Alan for letting us hold the event here. We're looking at a number of sites potentially for next year and haven't decided where we want to go but this is a very central location, very convenient, the local people are very supportive and helpful so we may be back, we'll see.

"The Labour party and its supporters are quite entitled to demonstrate and we are entitled to be here with our families enjoying ourselves as well."

Please take time to read this information, especially if you are not familiar with this type of event.

It's quite possible that the police will simply do as they please and ignore your civil liberties, but dont worry, a couple of years down the line you may find yourself with a big fat compensation cheque in your hands curtousy of the local constabulary!

Good luck to all attending.

Protesters have vowed to turn up in droves at the British National Party's annual Red, White and Blue Festival to be held in Denby next week.

The event will take place on fields off Codnor-Denby Lane, from Friday, August 15 to Sunday, August 17, even though a licence to sell alcohol and play live music was controversially refused by Amber Valley Borough Council after objections from police.

The anti-BNP rally has been organised by groups including Notts Stop The BNP, East Midlands Unite Against Fascism; Derby, Mansfield and Nottingham Trades Council and Derby Unite Against Fascism.

Coach loads of people are expected to arrive from all over the country to protest outside the festival.

Supporters of Nottinghamshire Stop the BNP and anti-fascists from Derby, were in the area on Monday, distributing leaflets to residents explaining why they will be protesting.

Trevor Masters, from the group, said: "We want to support local residents by making sure that the BNP don't come back here next year."

Protesters are expected to march along Codnor-Denby Lane to Codnor Park, where they will hold a rally, at about 11am on, Saturday, August 16.

Alan Warner, who owns the land where the festival will be held, said he was not worried: "The police have got everything in hand. They will shut the footpath so no-one will be able to get into the site and if they do they will be arrested."

He also claimed he was already being targeted by the groups. "I got up on Sunday morning and there were 16 hypodermic needles at the bottom of my garden. I phoned the police."

An England flag stolen from his property had been returned by post with anti-BNP slogans and Antifa scrawled on it. Antifa is the national and international alliance of militant anti-fascists.

The police are investigating the needles incident and have taken the flag away for forensic analysis.

Supt Howard Veigas said: "We are working with everyone who wishes to attend and hold a lawful protest and will police the event accordingly."

Last year's festival passed off peacefully without protest.

Over the weekend the company who supply portable toilets to the BNP Red White and Blue event were targetted by militant antifascists. All companies who support the RWB can expect to be targetted also. If you make money by helping the BNP, we will cost you money!

STS of Chesterfield, who happily process the BNPs shit (and we all know they are full of it) by servicing the RWB event with portable bogs, had their depot in Pottery Lane East, Chesterfield, targetted. Their gates we locked and glued and the slogan "bnp = shite" graffited.

STS have their office at 47 Rockingham Close Chesterfield S40 1JE, phone 01246 278754 and 07889 832076. Get in contact and tell them what you think of their support of the BNP.

Campaigns against all supporters of the BNP event will continue. We will stop the fascists!

Unite Against Fascism are refusing to support the locally-organised trade union demonstration against the BNP's Red, White and Blue "festival" on 16 August and, in an act of unbelievable sectarianism, have called their own.

**Please circulate and publish this text. It was not issued by Notts Stop the BNP or the other sponsors of the anti-BNP protest, but by a group of concerned activists who want to see a united demonstration on 16 August. (The contact details we have put down here are for the official campaign, however.)**

Between 15 and 17 August, the British National Party will be holding its annual Red, White and Blue "festival" at Codnor-Denby in Derbyshire on land owned by former BNP councillor Alan Warner. For months now, local anti-fascist groups and trade unions have been working to organise a protest on 16 August.

This protest was initiated by Nottinghamshire Stop the BNP, a campaign launched in January by a conference of one hundred labour movement, student and anti-fascist activists sponsored by local unions including FBU, UCU, Unison and the NUT. Notts Stop the BNP aims to build an anti-fascist movement on a working-class basis - mobilising mass action to physically confront the fascists and raising social demands around issues like jobs, homes and services to undercut their base.

The protest also involves Derby Unite Against Fascism, other local anti-fascist groups and a multitude of trade union organisations. East Midlands Unison, East Midlands TUC and the rail union RMT are sponsoring it, and RMT general secretary Bob Crow will be speaking.

Unfortunately, the national Unite Against Fascism organisation has been less keen to support the protest. After months of refusing to acknowledge the issue at all - ignoring repeated invitations to come and get involved in the organisation of the protest, and refusing to announce it from the platform at various national events - UAF has now called its own protest, taking place just down the road and at a different time from where and when the main protest is taking place!! (The UAF website implies that theirs is the only protest and supported by all the sponsors, but this is simply not true.)

UAF leader Weyman Bennett met representatives of the local campaign - including the chair of Derby UAF and a representative of East Midlands TUC - on Friday 25 July, but refused to agree to the amalgamation of the protests.

This is bizarre and outrageous behaviour.

UAF is dominated by the Socialist Workers Party (SWP); it may be that its leadership are reluctant to support a protest that they do not control, and one organised with the involvement of other socialist groups. If so, they should sober up! This protest is far too important to let sectarianism get in the way. We call on UAF to enter negotiations with the local campaign for the amalgamation of their protest into the main one, so that we can strike at the BNP and their racist "festival" with a single fist.

Meanwhile, we urge the labour movement and anti-fascists to mobilise for the protest.

OUR RESPONSE

The UAF obviously feel that they must retain control over anti-fascism in Britain as it is such a money spinner for them. These fuckers are so utterly enamoured with the commercial business school approach to growth (market monopoly and brand strength) that they are willing to sabotage genuine efforts to confront the BNP.

They almost certainly do not want their brand (Love Music Hate Racism) associated with serious attempts to shut down the RWB as it will affect their ability to hold pop concerts in the future (and holding pop concerts as we all know is the only real way to defeat the fascist threat). Controlling or splitting the counter demo is a good way of protecting their future income.

Standing in solidarity against the BNP with the good and honourable people of Codnor and the surrounding area certainly does not even register on the radar of the UAF big-wigs.

Fortunately, us being Antifa, imbued as we are with the true spirit of anti-fascism, don't give a fuck about Weymann Bennett, the UAF, LMHR or the SWP.

We are safe in the knowledge that all systems and organisations that rely on continued growth regardless of the costs to people, the environment, integrity and decency will ultimately collapse under their own contradictions. Brought to their knees by the very people they treat with such disdain and whimsy.

We offer our solidarity and friendship to Notts Stop the BNP and all the ordinary people who are determined to spoil the Fascists' fun and register their dissent at the presence of such scum in their area.

If you want to join Antifa in shutting down the RWB festival give us a ring on 07522 034 032 and visit our website.

Nazi Bashers In BNP Vow

An anti-fascist organisation hell-bent on violence is targeting the British National Party's summer festival.

The hardline group Antifa - who advocate the use of extreme violence against neo-Nazi's - are calling on members to descend on the Red, White and Blue Festival next month.

The organisation has members all over Europe and were responsible for the decapitation of the waxwork Adolf Hitler in Berlin.

They are now targeting the BNP's festival. Gerry Gable, of anti-fascist magazine Searchlight said: "Antifa like getting stuck in basically.

"They are related to groups in Germany and other parts of Europe. They will confront Nazis wherever they find them. They're really quite intimidating and scary."

Antifa is using left-wing message boards to rally support for direct action against the festival.

Police were so concerned about the prospect of violence at the festival they advised councillors to refuse the BNP a license to hold the two-day event in Denby, Derbyshire, from August 15.

They told a council meeting the BNP would need a 10ft fence, floodlights and up to 400 security staff to stave off clash with the Antifa hardliners.

But despite warnings, the BNP has vowed to go ahead with the bash.

One chilling internet posting from Antifa read: "If you too are sick of the baffling success of these thick tw*ts, their lies and their hate, we urge you to join our mobilisation.

"We will be descending on their farm and wish to encourage as many people as possible to join us. We at Antifa intend to shut it down."

Thanks to all the international comrades some who have already started to prepare for "Smash The BNP's Scumfest!"

Many from as far as Greece and Russia.

We now have run out of space to accomodate anymore so others will need to make their own plans. No doubt we will be able to sort something on an ad hoc basis if people are stuck...

Antifa England are looking forward to working with you all!
